New Fall Leaf Collection Information (October 2023)

Excerpts from Pantagraph 17 Oct 2023

This year's leaf collection period will run from Oct. 30 to Dec. 15. In the past, crews have started collections at one side of the city and gradually worked their way across the community. But under the new action plan, Public Works Director Mose Rickey said there will be multiple starting point that can converge on one area, if needed, once the leaves start to drop.

Residents should rake their leaves in piles no higher than 3 feet, placing them behind the curb and not in the street. Leaves must be separated from other materials; brush such as trees, shrubs, bushes, garden trimmings, flowers, plants, fruit and vegetable trimmings and decaying pumpkins could cause damage to city equipment.

"Leaves may not be placed in containers or biodegradable bags during seasonal leaf collection," Rickey said. "This will inhibit us and slow us down and we're all about being efficient and progressive."

Bagged leaves will not be picked up. This year, city staff will leave small, brightly colored yard flags near the leaves if they did not meet the standards for pickup. This is a change from the previous notification method of door hangers.

Bulk pickup for solid waste program customers will be suspended during collections. "I believe this gives us the opportunity to make sure that we concentrate on these leaves," Rickey said. To ensure transparency through this process, Rickey said his department is working with information technology staff to add a map to the city's website that will show where leaf pickup ended each day of the collection period.

Instead of waiting for curbside service, residents who are part of the city's solid waste program also can drop off their materials at the Citizen Convenience Center at 402 S. East St. The center is open 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and 7 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Saturdays.

Trash Guidelines
  • Bloomington Solid Waste & Recycle Coach (bottom of the page) to determine days for garage, recycle, brush, and bulk waste pick up.
  • Garbage pickup with carts on Mondays (except on Christmas Day); Recycling is every other week.  See the Recycle Coach info on the right sidebar.
  • Brush will be collected every other week on non-recycle weeks.
  • Trash should be set by the curb after 2 PM on Sunday (no later than 6 AM Monday) and removed by 9 AM on Tuesday.
  • Landscaping debris is typically picked up on Monday.  Put landscaping debris out by the curb the day before.
  • AVOID putting landscaping debris and bulk trash out on the curb and having it set there for multiple days or an entire week!  This reflects on the overall look of the high-quality profile of our neighborhood.
